And We BurnThe Sky

Et Nous Brûlerons les Nuages

Leave together. Find a way back.

French pilots, Yak fighters, the Eastern Front. And We Burn The Sky turns the novel Et Nous Brûlerons les Nuages into an aerial combat campaign: prepare the sortie, take off, protect the others, engage enemy fighters and flak, then bring the aircraft back to the field.

Combat has a geography. The return carries its own weight.

The sortie

The whole sortie.

The sky begins on the ground. Briefing, aircraft preparation, departure and takeoff lead into combat, the return and the landing. The engagement is one part of that sequence. Enough of the aircraft has to survive to finish the work, find the field and put down what remains.

The campaign gives each mission continuity through decisions, damage, objectives and debriefing. The hangar and the airfield belong to the same world as the fighting.

The hangar screen: a three-dimensional model of a white Yak-1 numbered 3, red stars on the fuselage and tail, shown in three-quarter view; beside it a panel with tabs for appearance, armament and handling, marking options, and buttons for the briefing and the departure
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — the hangar: Yak-1 no. 3 in winter white, three-quarter view, markings panel.
The mission order screen: a paper card headed Ordre d’instruction 01, Le premier circuit, with the brief to take off, hold position on the leader, make one firing pass on the panels and come back to land; beside it a sketch of the circuit over the Ivanovo base, the difficulty, the aircraft Yak-1 no. 3 and the flight and combat controls
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — mission order of the instruction chapter, “Le premier circuit”: the brief, the circuit sketch and the controls.
Two white Yak-1 fighters at the foot of a packed-snow runway marked with tyre tracks, seen from above between snowbanks and dark woods; the header reads Départ, instruction 01, décollage assisté, with throttle, engine speed and fuel, and the footer lists the takeoff controls
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — Ivanovo instruction base, winter 1942–43: assisted takeoff from the snow-covered strip.
Combat

An occupied sky.

Enemy fighters demand attention beyond the nose of the aircraft. The planes under escort have their own vulnerability. On the ground, columns follow their roads, batteries take position and crossings determine what can still move.

Sorties combine aerial engagements, protection duties and attacks on ground targets. Cannon and machine guns have their work; assault aircraft handle what requires heavier force. The landscape participates in the mission: roads, railways, airfields, rivers and gun positions shape the encounter.

Two green Pe-2 bombers with red stars fly beside two grey Yak fighters over a pine forest crossed by a dirt track; a German fighter shows at the lower left edge; the display reads Ordre, rassemblement, retour en formation, and the wingman Armand answers that he is forming up
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — mission 07, “Le Niémen”: two Pe-2 bombers under the pair’s cover, the wingman called back into formation.
Two grey Yak fighters above a wide river running between wooded banks, one of them firing; military vehicles stand along a track on the right bank and three red tracer rounds cross the upper left; the order line says to hold off the attackers, then break away together
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — mission 07, “Le Niémen”: a Yak fires above the river, vehicles on the bank, enemy fire coming up.
The campaign

From thaw to the return.

The campaign contains an instruction chapter, twelve missions and an epilogue, linked by illustrated narrative sequences. It crosses the sectors and seasons of the front, from the first sorties of 1943 to the final engagements of 1945.

The return is playable. On 20 June 1945, the formation leaves Saint-Dizier for Le Bourget. After interceptions and flak positions, the last flight has a different purpose: hold formation, cross the landscape and land. That return closes the campaign.

The missions give playable form to the novel and to a documented historical setting. Some combine several situations; they do not claim to reproduce every real sortie minute by minute.

Two whitewashed Yak-1 fighters and their shadows over snow-covered ground, the lower one firing at a row of square target panels at the top of the frame, one of them breaking apart; the display reads Panneau T03 détruit, 1 sur 4, and the header P00, Ivanovo
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — instruction chapter, Ivanovo, winter 1942–43: a firing pass on the practice panels. Training, not combat.
An illustration: a hand holding a vernier caliper on a worn wooden workbench, beside a black-and-white photograph of two women in long coats standing before a damaged building, a stack of letters and a box of screws and washers; a window opens on Paris rooftops; two lines of narration under the heading 17,4 millimètres
Illustrated narrative sequence as displayed by version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — the workbench and the photograph. An illustration, not gameplay.
A credits screen over a darkened workbench and a photograph of fighters lined up on an airfield before a crowd holding flowers: the words Avec la collaboration du Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace, Le Bourget, with the museum’s logo, then et de l’association Mémorial Normandie-Niemen, with its two emblems
Real capture of version 1.0.0, 7 October 2026 — the credits: “Avec la collaboration du Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace” and “de l’association Mémorial Normandie-Niemen”.

Literary source / published novel

The book beneath the wings.

Et Nous Brûlerons les Nuages carries the memory of Normandie-Niémen, the French pilots who went east to fight alongside the Soviet Union, and the men the return could not bring back. The game extends that material through aircraft, fields, escort duties and the continuity of sorties.

Version 1.0.0 is out. What it contains, and where it stops.

And We Burn The Sky 1.0.0 has been available on itch.io since 7 October 2026, for Windows. The download is the whole game: the campaign, the Arcade mode, the hangar, the music and the credits, playable offline.

This page states what version 1.0.0 contains and where it stops. Each capture names the version it comes from and its date.

In version 1.0.0

  • A campaign of an instruction chapter, twelve missions and a playable epilogue, linked by illustrated narrative sequences.
  • Each sortie runs from hangar and mission order through an assisted takeoff, the mission, an assisted landing and a debrief.
  • The player flies the Yak-1, then the Yak-9, then the Yak-3. Pe-2 and Il-2 crews are escorted in several missions.
  • An Arcade mode opens all fourteen chapters directly. It never writes into the campaign save.

  • Single player and offline: one ZIP archive to extract, nothing else to install.

Stated limits

  • Windows is the only platform. The executable is not signed, so Windows may show a warning at first launch.
  • Arcade aerial combat seen from above, not a cockpit simulation.
  • The missions adapt a novel and a documented historical setting. They are not reconstructions of individual sorties.
  • The captures on this page were taken on 7 October 2026 by automated runs of version 1.0.0. They are resized, never retouched.
