Red Flags: Open the Line is a playable adaptation of the novel Red Flags, rebuilt as a standalone twenty-one-map boomer shooter. The book’s characters, places, violence and institutional absurdity become combat spaces, weapons, enemies, bosses and systems.

Mission profile

  • Turn the Red Flags manuscript into a campaign that can be played, not an adaptation pitch.
  • Ship a standalone game that never requires or contains a Doom, Doom II or other proprietary IWAD.
  • Keep the canon auditable: every map, weapon and encounter traced to a source chapter or an explicitly marked adaptation.
  • Prove the build by machine before calling it content: static gates, runtime matrices and per-file provenance.
  • Distribute it publicly and offline, with nothing between the player and the game but a download.

Architecture

Verified state

What exists and has been exercised at the time of writing.

  • Version 1.0.0 is publicly available on itch.io for Windows and Linux.
  • The campaign runs twenty-one maps across five episodes, with one secret map for players who inspect the cracks.
  • Eight canonical weapons are carried through the whole campaign.
  • The distribution contains its own runtime and requires no commercial IWAD.
  • The game runs offline in single player, with no account, no network dependency and no telemetry.
  • Linux and Windows bundles are built from the same source and enter the campaign from their own launchers.
  • Save and load, death and restart, and the map-to-statistics flow are exercised in the shipped build.
  • Every map traces back to a chapter of the novel or to an adaptation the repository marks as explicit.

Stated limits

What this project is not, written here so nobody has to discover it later.

  • This is a single-player game. There is no multiplayer, no cooperative mode and no online service.
  • The campaign is an adaptation of the novel, not an illustration of it. Where the game departs from the book, the repository says so.
  • No commercial IWAD is included and none is required. Nothing from Doom or Doom II is redistributed here.
  • The published campaign is the whole public claim. No sequel, port or console version is announced.
  • Content note: stylized violence, blood and gore, disturbing imagery, strong language, and political or institutional satire.

From novel to machine

The game does not merely borrow a setting from the book. It translates its world through movement, pressure and architecture. Offices, clinics, motels, rusted districts and fortress machinery become authored combat spaces rather than passive references.

Twenty-one maps, no safe distance

Five episodes carry Viktor Ardent from a white institutional world into a transmission that keeps getting worse. The campaign crosses offices, seed rooms, hospitals, industrial districts, motels, cabarets and final machinery, with a secret map for those who inspect the cracks.

Standalone

The distribution contains its own runtime and requires no commercial IWAD. It runs offline in single player on Windows and Linux, combining fast classic FPS movement with contemporary display support.

Release

Public version 1.0.0 is available on itch.io. The production dossier remains here; the game itself has left the archive.

Literary source / revised edition

The book underneath the level geometry.

Red Flags exists first as a manuscript. The revised edition carries the terrain this dossier compiles into maps: the retail floor, the maintenance corridor, the clinic and the false border, written long before any of them became a place you have to survive.

The campaign documented on this page is built from that manuscript and is now publicly released. The book is not an appendix to the software; it is the older machine underneath it.

Published under Pomegranate Editions. The edition record, and where the book can be obtained, is kept on the Editions page rather than here.
